Description
I have painted many views of the Schooner Sultana. I find inspiration for a beautiful painting everywhere I look on the ship. This time I decided to make a painting featuring the entire ship. The Sultana is a beautiful historic replica schooner out of Chestertown, Maryland, on the Eastern Shore. It is a "school ship" which sails the Chesapeake Bay from April to November providing thousands of students with opportunities to learn about colonial history and the ecology of the bay. I had the great good fortune to participate in the building of the ship and, on occasion to volunteer as a member of the crew. The ship and the people who built and sail her mean a great deal to me and this painting is an attempt to express that. She is indeed a beautiful ship! Note the wonderful play of sunlight through the sails and the marvelous variety of shapes and lines, lights and darks and textures! Where there is a sailing vessel there is sky and water! I treated the sky simply to provide a background that highlights but does not compete with the ship. The water adds its own wonderful variety of shapes, colors and textures. Finally, there is the wind! What would a sailing ship do without the wind? You can't see the wind but you see its effect in the flags, the pennant, the billowing sails, the angle of the mast and the wake around the bow. She is alive! and that is the whole point.
