Description
A tall ship presents endless treats for the eye. Almost anywhere you look on a tall ship, you will find many of the elements that we associate with art: lines, textures, colors, contrasts, composition, verticals, horizontals, balance, textures. This is the fore mast of the Schooner Sultana with the fore sail and the top sail reefed (taken in, put away). Reefing is done while under sail to reduce the amount of sail exposed to the wind. When in port, reefing is basically putting the sails away by pulling them in and tightening them against a mast or a boom or a yard arm. In this piece the Sultana is moored and the sails are reefed. The ship is sitting still but your eye certainly is not. It is drawn upward by the main vertical (the mast and the shrouds) until it encounters all of the strong dark two thirds of the way up into the painting (the boom on the left and the two yards on the right). The many control and support lines (ropes to you landlubbers) also take you eye to the top center of the piece creating a strong center of interest. We artists love to talk about warms and cools. Well look at the warms and cools in this one. The warm is the beautiful mast and the cool is the sky! I think it works! ~Jim
