Description
I find just about any part of a tall ship to be beautiful and a worthy subject for a painting. I have always marveled at all of the art elements that are naturally present in one of these amazing vessels. This painting is based around the trestle tree on the Schooner Sultana in Chestertown, Maryland. The trestle tree (the large gray shape in the upper right center of the painting)is basically the "joint" between the mast and the top mast on the ship. It is a focal point both artistically and structurally. Notice the great variety in the lines (ropes) and how they draw your eye to the trestle tree. Also, note all of the "blue triangles" created by the sky as seen through the lines and how many of them draw your eye to the tree as well. It makes a strong composition.
