I have said many times that I simply "walk into" many of my paintings when I am wowed by the beauty of what surrounds me. That is very much the case with this painting. My wife and I vacation in Daytona Beach, Florida and we have some favorite places to go in that area. One of our favorites is a restaurant called "Under the Bridge", which is actually in Port Orange and faces the Intercoastal Waterway. After a great day on the beach we go there for dinner. One night after dinner, we walked out back of the restaurant and right into this scene. I, of course, said "Wow, look at that, that would make a great painting!" Well, here it is, and it did! The painting challenges here were: the sky...not only trying to get the various colors, but also the softness of the clouds and the feeling of approaching darkness; the water...make it look wet, make it reflect the sky and make it properly reflect the boat, docks, and pylons; the shadows...on the boat and even on the reflection of the bot in the water (it is almost, but not quite, in silhouette); the lines...make them visible, not too fine and not too wide, and make them as neat as possible (small brush and a hopefully steady hand!). I had fun from the very beginning on this painting, and sometime along the way I said to myself, "This is going to be a good painting!" I hope you enjoy it~J
