I have said many times that I simply "walk into" many of my paintings when I am wowed by the beauty of what surrounds me. That is very much the case with this painting. My wife and I vacation in Daytona Beach, Florida and we have some favorite places to go in that area. One of our favorites is a restaurant called "Under the Bridge", which is actually in Port Orange and faces the Intercoastal Waterway. After a great day on the beach we go there for dinner. One night after dinner, we walked out back of the restaurant and right into this scene. I, of course, said "Wow, look at that, that would make a great painting!" Well, here it is, and it did! The painting challenges here were: the sky...not only trying to get the various colors, but also the softness of the clouds and the feeling of approaching darkness; the water...make it look wet, make it reflect the sky and make it properly reflect the boat, docks, and pylons; the shadows...on the boat and even on the reflection of the bot...
Jim is a graduate of West Virginia University. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Art in 1970 and a Master's of Instructional Design in 1977. An artist all of his life, Jim took some instruction with Leland McLelland after moving to Central Ohio at the end of 1977. This was a pivotal time for Jim because he finally learned watercolor techniques which allowed him to illustrate. A realistic interpreter of what he sees, Jim finally felt like he'd found the medium that he could identify with. Though watercolor can be unforgiving, Jim has learned to create beautiful watercolors of the things he loves best.
