Description
On the beautiful Eastern Shore of Maryland is a wonderful place known as the Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge. This refuge is on a 2200 acre island that makes up the very southern tip of the land north of the Chester River. If you know where to look, it is visible from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and it is right across the Chester River from the Kent Narrows Bridge. You access it from the north (from the town of Rock Hall, Maryland) crossing a small bridge on Rt. 445. When you cross that bridge you are instantly engulfed by an amazing natural world. The word wilderness applies even though it is close to major cities and towns and busy highways and byways. The refuge provides habitat for thousands of wintering waterfowl including the Tundra Swan. It is home to deer, wild turkey, Ospreys, and Bald Eagles. Oh, and wildflowers and butterflies! This painting is my attempt to capture the beauty of the place and to impart, at least to some extent, the feeling of wilderness, of isolation, of unspoiled nature that the visit there gave me.~J
