I love this old tree! It was simply crying out to be painted! I was driving along a country road in West Virginia in the early fall and came across it. I was amazed at the variety of shapes, lines and textures in the tree and the variety of colors in the early fall background. The tree certainly looks a little "worse for the wear" but at the same time, it has a kind of nobility about it. It dominates the scene even though it is almost a monotone in the midst of the strong colors. It could be a J.R.R. Tolkien Ent waving its arms and charging to the front of the pack to defend the wooded realm. This painting was a joy to print. I used some resist. nearly all of the colors in my palette, positive and negative painting techniques, wet-in-wet and wet-on-dry techniques, brushes and sponges to apply the paint. I hope you feel that joy.~J
Jim is a graduate of West Virginia University. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Art in 1970 and a Master's of Instructional Design in 1977. An artist all of his life, Jim took some instruction with Leland McLelland after moving to Central Ohio at the end of 1977. This was a pivotal time for Jim because he finally learned watercolor techniques which allowed him to illustrate. A realistic interpreter of what he sees, Jim finally felt like he'd found the medium that he could identify with. Though watercolor can be unforgiving, Jim has learned to create beautiful watercolors of the things he loves best. As you view his work you will see some of the same themes: barns, old barns with such character; farmsteads, yes you will see some...
