This farm is a favorite of mine. I drive past it almost every day and I have painted it before in different seasons. It always makes a very nice painting simply because it, the farm itself, is a great composition, with interesting shapes and textures in the middle ground and fore ground, wonderful colors combinations and an always terrific background whatever the season. This time I decided to paint it in mid-summer and to add an element that I had never painted before...the trees in the very near foreground. I actually moved over into the trees near my vantage point to view the farm through the trees. I think the close, nearly silhouetted trees provide an enhanced focus on the farm and background. I created the background, a completely tree covered hill, with very simple shapes and a very limited color pattern. This guides your eye to the house and barn and the wonderful trees near the house.~J
Jim is a graduate of West Virginia University. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Art in 1970 and a Master's of Instructional Design in 1977. An artist all of his life, Jim took some instruction with Leland McLelland after moving to Central Ohio at the end of 1977. This was a pivotal time for Jim because he finally learned watercolor techniques which allowed him to illustrate. A realistic interpreter of what he sees, Jim finally felt like he'd found the medium that he could identify with. Though watercolor can be unforgiving, Jim has learned to create beautiful watercolors of the things he loves best. As you view his work you will see some of the same themes: barns, old barns with such character; farmsteads, yes you will see some...
