Artist's Description

This is a special painting to me. It was a commission done for a good friend of mine as a gift for her husband. He had served in the Huey MedEvac helicopters while in the U.S. Army in Germany. That would be enough to make it special for me but as it happens, I am an Army veteran as well and during my service in Vietnam, I had occasion to serve on Huey MedEvac missions there. I had thought many times about doing a painting like this but just had never done it. The commission gave me that opportunity.
the Huey was a marvelous helicopter and the people who flew them (in my experience) were unbelievably talented and courageous. They went right to where the very real and very present danger was and saved countless lives. This painting will serve as my tribute to them.

About Jim Gerkin

Jim Gerkin

Jim is a graduate of West Virginia University. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Art in 1970 and a Master's of Instructional Design in 1977. An artist all of his life, Jim took some instruction with Leland McLelland after moving to Central Ohio at the end of 1977. This was a pivotal time for Jim because he finally learned watercolor techniques which allowed him to illustrate. A realistic interpreter of what he sees, Jim finally felt like he'd found the medium that he could identify with. Though watercolor can be unforgiving, Jim has learned to create beautiful watercolors of the things he loves best. As you view his work you will see some of the same themes: barns, old barns with such character; farmsteads, yes you will see some...
