Description
In my younger days, as I traveled around the countryside, I would see barns like this one, the famous Mail Pouch Barn, all over the place. I loved them and have painted several of them during my art career. For may, many of those years, the barns were painted by one of the original American barn painters, Harley Warrick of Ohio. During his 50 year career, (1946-1996), he painted or retouched over 20,000 barns in 13 midwestern and Appalachian states! It was one of the earliest forms of outside advertising. Of course, since those days, we have learned a lot about mouth cancer and other forms of cancers and the role tobacco plays in all of that. For that reason, these barns became more and more rare as advertising for tobacco and its use declined dramatically. Also there was highway beautification legislation that banned much roadside advertising (including Mail Pouch Barns). Soon after, however, that was reversed as the Mail Pouch Barns were declared national historic landmarks in 1974. So, when I saw this one in central West Virginia, I just had to paint it. I named this piece "Legacy Barn" because it is a part of the legacy of historic barns, outdoor advertising, national historic land marks, the legacy of The Barn Painter-Harley Warrick, and the legacy of loss-the devastating impact on individuals and families because of tobacco caused cancers. All of this is worth thinking about. ~Jim
