After almost every snowfall that we have, I drive around the area looking for the visual treats that snow provides. This one was simply the highway itself. I came around a bend and saw this great scene. I loved the uphill, curving, disappearing highway and, I loved the visual framing of the highway-the natural framing on the right (the trees) and the man-made framing on the left (the poles and wires). The bright sun, the snow and the light sky create a truly light and bright scene-the whole thing kind of glows! Amid all this lightness, there are the wonderful dark shapes of the pine trees that mirror the shape of the highway and help to define the shapes of the lighter colored trees on the right. The mailboxes and the trash can hint at the folks living there and the road signs help guide our eye through the painting as they help guide the cars on the road. Enjoy~Jim
Jim is a graduate of West Virginia University. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Art in 1970 and a Master's of Instructional Design in 1977. An artist all of his life, Jim took some instruction with Leland McLelland after moving to Central Ohio at the end of 1977. This was a pivotal time for Jim because he finally learned watercolor techniques which allowed him to illustrate. A realistic interpreter of what he sees, Jim finally felt like he'd found the medium that he could identify with. Though watercolor can be unforgiving, Jim has learned to create beautiful watercolors of the things he loves best. As you view his work you will see some of the same themes: barns, old barns with such character; farmsteads, yes you will see some...
