I painted this farm once before but because of the strong colors in the barns and the silos I imagined that it would be beautiful in a heavy snowstorm. Indeed it is! I waited awhile for such a storm to come but it did not do so, in this case. I added the snow. The barns and silos do indeed provide a great contrast to the snowflakes, as I thought they would, but my favorite part of the painting is the distant background- the sky and the distant hills and fields. Look carefully there! There are all manner of fields and hollows and tree lines appearing and disappearing in the snow-all from a few simple brushstrokes.
Jim is a graduate of West Virginia University. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Art in 1970 and a Master's of Instructional Design in 1977. An artist all of his life, Jim took some instruction with Leland McLelland after moving to Central Ohio at the end of 1977. This was a pivotal time for Jim because he finally learned watercolor techniques which allowed him to illustrate. A realistic interpreter of what he sees, Jim finally felt like he'd found the medium that he could identify with. Though watercolor can be unforgiving, Jim has learned to create beautiful watercolors of the things he loves best.
