Jim I share your fascination with old barns and other buildings ... they have such character and tell such stories if we only take a minute to listen. This particular piece is glorious ... I love the sense of the slightly askew of that wonderful porch ... the rich colors ... and your perfect shadows!!!! Really, really a beauty!!!!! l/f t and p

Artist's Description

I am always on the lookout for great old barns, farmhouses and sometimes sheds or outbuildings. This one I found on a country road in southern Ohio. I liked the unusual shape of this one, the interesting color variations in the rusty roof and the very subtle, but important touches of color in the license plates decorating the front wall. I also found the entire hillside interesting and fun to paint-lots of texture and subtle color variations in the grasses and the background woods and great contrast between the foreground ochres and the background burnt siennas. Then there is the nifty tree on the left that adds a vertical element to counter the mostly horizontal thrust of the shed. I think it is an effective painting that challenges you to look at the details and maybe wonder who last used this shed and for what purpose.

About Jim Gerkin

Jim Gerkin

Jim is a graduate of West Virginia University. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Art in 1970 and a Master's of Instructional Design in 1977. An artist all of his life, Jim took some instruction with Leland McLelland after moving to Central Ohio at the end of 1977. This was a pivotal time for Jim because he finally learned watercolor techniques which allowed him to illustrate. A realistic interpreter of what he sees, Jim finally felt like he'd found the medium that he could identify with. Though watercolor can be unforgiving, Jim has learned to create beautiful watercolors of the things he loves best. As you view his work you will see some of the same themes: barns, old barns with such character; farmsteads, yes you will see some...
