Description
I was commissioned to do this piece. A member of a family that I know very well contacted me after the family found an older black and white photograph. This was a photograph of the family patriarch (who had recently passed away) standing with a buddy during their military service. (US Army). The two were leaning against an Army staff car in the motor pool at the White Sands Missile Base, New Mexico. They were obviously enjoying the moment. George is on the left and Harold (the family patriarch) is on the right with the cigarette. I asked if the family wanted me to leave the cigarette out (you know, due to the current sentiment against smoking) but they said, "no, leave it in, that was something that he was doing at that point in his life". I liked that. The minute I saw the photograph, I knew what I would do, I would do the figures in sepia to help identify the time period and I would add a close-up section of the U.S. flag as a background to honor these men's military service. For those who might be interested, the staff car is a 1951 Buick Special! It was a pleasure and an honor to do this painting.~J
