Description
I've always been intrigued by the "art" that is old: old cars, old trucks, and any other old machine. Machines are meant to work, to do something, so even when it is not apparent to us, the design has a logic to it, the shapes fit, they work together, there is a balance and there is a purpose. A machine exists in time, so the effects of time are also logical, i.e. rust, dirt, scratches and dents. Wear and tear: the combination of the two can can create some beautiful images. This particular image is part of an antique, horse drawn road grader that I came across while traveling in Montana. It has all the elements I listed above. Notice the shapes, the variety of textures and lines. Look for warm and cool; rough and smooth; dark and light; wide and narrow; light and shadow. It's unusual content but it is, I think, a strong painting.~J
