Description

On a recent visit to Florence, we did, as all visitors to Florence do, want very much to see the famous statute of David by Michelangelo. Of course I had seen photographs of the work in art books going all the way back to high school, all the way through college and recently in travel brochures, but I was very much drawn to see it in person. When we entered the hall where the statue was located I simply could not take my eyes off of it. Even from many yards away it was a stunning! As we were able to approach the statue, the beauty of the work and the amazing skill that it took to produce it became more and more apparent. Like with the artists' "Pieta", one can scarcely imagine how an artist, 500 years ago, could produce such a magnificent work. It is inspiring! It did inspire me to attempt a watercolor of the famous work in place in the hall. This painting is the result. It is obviously not very creative on my part (I essentially used the David as a model), but it was a challenge to try to capture some of the subtleties in watercolor. I think it makes an attractive piece.
