I was beginning the professional part of my art career when I was privileged enough to become involved with the Schooner Sultana Project. Both of those "projects" could, actually should, require a whole lot of time. A conflict, perhaps!? I thought about it for a while trying to decide whether or not I should stop working on the ship and concentrate on my art career, and then one day while on the ship I happened to simply look up and this image is what I saw! So I thought, "wow, instead of choosing between working on the ship or painting, I need to make the ship one of my painting subjects. I found, looking around on the beautiful 18th century schooner, that there was a "painting everywhere you looked". The variety of line, the variety of textures, the contrasting colors, the structural balance inherent in a ship, all make for wonderful compositions. Jim is a graduate of West Virginia University. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Art in 1970 and a Master's of Instructional Design in 1977. An artist all of his life, Jim took some instruction with Leland McLelland after moving to Central Ohio at the end of 1977. This was a pivotal time for Jim because he finally learned watercolor techniques which allowed him to illustrate. A realistic interpreter of what he sees, Jim finally felt like he'd found the medium that he could identify with. Though watercolor can be unforgiving, Jim has learned to create beautiful watercolors of the things he loves best.
