Artist's Description

I love to paint the old barns that are so common in the beautiful farming country where we live. I paint them because they are so very interesting and I paint them because they are going away! This one caught my attention because of the red door and because of its particularly interesting shape. I loved the left side of the barn that you can see through (under), and that has that great pattern of dark shadows punctuated by glimpses of the sky and fields beyond. I truly enjoy painting the fascinating variety and shapes, line, and texture that make up the sides of barns. The weathering, the gaps, the spaces between boards, the broken an bending boards all make for a visual treat. I like this barn a lot...hope you do too!~J

About Jim Gerkin

Jim Gerkin

Jim is a graduate of West Virginia University. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Art in 1970 and a Master's of Instructional Design in 1977. An artist all of his life, Jim took some instruction with Leland McLelland after moving to Central Ohio at the end of 1977. This was a pivotal time for Jim because he finally learned watercolor techniques which allowed him to illustrate. A realistic interpreter of what he sees, Jim finally felt like he'd found the medium that he could identify with. Though watercolor can be unforgiving, Jim has learned to create beautiful watercolors of the things he loves best. As you view his work you will see some of the same themes: barns, old barns with such character; farmsteads, yes you will see some...
