I have always enjoyed painting the old cars, old pickup trucks and, in this case, old tractors that one can find along the rural roads of America. They are harder and harder to find but once in a while you come across a gem. They are beautiful in their own way and there is a history that begs to be imagined if not actually known. This particular tractor is the oldest one I had ever come across. It was in a lovely small town in Upstate New York. I was drawn to it by the interesting shapes of the old, classic design and by the variety of the colors and color intensity in the rusty surfaces. (I used mostly burnt sienna and Alizerin crimson in those areas.) I composed the painting around a great visual triangle created by one of the front wheels, one of the rear wheels, and the steering wheel. The spokes in the wheels and steering wheel plus the openings in the engine cowling provide lots of visual interest. I think it is an interesting piece even if you're not a fan of "equipment...
Jim is a graduate of West Virginia University. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Art in 1970 and a Master's of Instructional Design in 1977. An artist all of his life, Jim took some instruction with Leland McLelland after moving to Central Ohio at the end of 1977. This was a pivotal time for Jim because he finally learned watercolor techniques which allowed him to illustrate. A realistic interpreter of what he sees, Jim finally felt like he'd found the medium that he could identify with. Though watercolor can be unforgiving, Jim has learned to create beautiful watercolors of the things he loves best.
