Description
As a nation, we've done a pretty good job of gathering up all the old rusting cars and trucks that used to dot the landscape. It's good that we did that. But there was something beautiful and even haunting about them. I always believed that when someone parked their old car in the yard or out by the barn it was not to create an "environmental issue" it was because they loved that old car-it meant a great deal to them-they did not want to part with it, maybe they were even going to give it to Junior! Of course, after awhile, nature takes its course and the car won't start, and then it can't be fixed, and then it can't be moved and then the grass and weeds and flowers and even trees grow up around and even through it. And then you have what we see here: the beautiful design elements of the car, now rusted and broken contrasted with the green leaves of a singular new weed growing up between the bumper and the grill. It's the old and the new, it's the past and the present, it's the mineral and the vegetable (weed), it's the mechanical and the natural. It is light and shadow, line and texture, warm and cool. I enjoyed doing this painting a great deal. Can you tell? By the way, if you are interested, the car was a 1947 Chevy Fleetline, the weed, well it is, a weed!
