Description
I have done several paintings involving the Schooner Sultana (a historic replica ship out of Chestertown, Maryland). This one is of Captain Jamie standing near one of the ships hand cannons (swivel guns). Jamie is a very talented ship’s captain who taught me a great deal about the ship and about sailing as I participated in the Sultana project. This particular moment captures him calmly surveying the ship in preparation for his next command. Obviously, Jamie makes a great portrait subject but the painting also has some interesting elements related to the cannon. One is as a symbol of quiet, restrained strength. Both the Captain and the cannon exude this quality. Another is the similar colors of the Captain’s jacket and the cannon. It ties them together in a visually interesting way. So, while this is a portrait of the Captain, it also speaks of the notions of competence, watchfulness, strength, preparedness to act, and consequence.
