Description
This painting was a commissioned piece. It is a pilot and his Huey MedEvac helicopter. It is very meaningful to me because it was commissioned by one MedEvac crewman as a gift for another MedEvac crewman. It is also special to me as I had some experience with MedEvac during my own military service. From a symbolic standpoint, I loved the way the pilot proudly stands by his helicopter with his arm, almost lovingly on the nose. It really does express the man-machine connection so necessary to get this serious and difficult work done. From an artistic standpoint, there is a beautiful contrast between the human form and the mechanical nature of the machine. I particularly love the reflections in the helicopter's windows all around. The light in the sky is reflected off the far side of the curved windows and changes in an interesting way as you look to the closer windows. The strong blue in one section actually highlights the pilot. And, I love the reflection of the rotor in the front windshield which adds an interesting, strong visual element along with the other details around the windshield. I want to pay tribute to all the men and women who did, and who do this heroic work.
