Description
I am always on the lookout for interesting sights as I travel the country roads around my house. One morning last winter, I came across an old, red, Ford flat bed truck parked along the fence line between a barn and a brick farm house. I thought it might make a nice painting. This is the result. The dark red color of the truck provide an immediate focal point which is nicely framed by the interesting colors and shapes in the barn on the left and by the brick color and the dark trees on the right. I paint scenes like this, first of all, because I think frames are beautiful things: the barns are beautiful, the tractors and trucks are beautiful, the people are beautiful, the animals are beautiful, the work is noble-all of that is worthy subject matter for paintings. Another reason that I paint these scenes is that they are changing, all of it is changing: the people the barns, the tractors, and I want to celebrate it as it is, as it was, and maybe even as it will be. One more reason I paint these: for me, each of these scenes begs the viewer to ponder the slice of life it portrays: who are (or were) these people?, are they the original proprietors?, why don't they fix the barn?, what is my relationship with them?, why did they have a flat bed truck? (groceries maybe!) And then there is this; in 1972 the Eagles band had their first major hit, "Take it Easy". There is a line in that song..."...its a girl my Lord in a flat bed Ford slowin' down to take a look at me." It's not very likely, but this could actually be that truck!?!
